Rune Meanings
I think I am the only jeweller working with runes in South Africa - if there are other manufacturing jewellers who are, I would love to hear from you. If you would like a custom piece of runic jewelry made - send me a mail or visit me at the organic market in Johannesburg. We can engrave the runes onto pendants, rings, money clips - in fact onto just about anything.
Runes sets should usually be made up by you. This way you infuse your energy into your runes. I have made up rune sets using semi precious tumbled gemstones. The client picks the gemstones and decides which rune goes on each. This helps with the energetic transfer. They look great in amethyst or pink rose quartz.
I prefer the ancient meanings to the modern rune meanings. The newer rune interpretations seem a bit "nice" Too easy and not gritty enough.
Spending time with the rune symbols is the best way to get to know them. Insight comes from familiarity. As you work with the rune symbols you will gain new insights and often you will add your own meaning and interpretation to the symbol. When you start off working with the runes do not take them to seriously - in fact I have found that it is a fun process rather than a serious one. Allow the meaning to flow into you and see what comes from it.
Drawing a rune every day is a good way to start. As you go through your day you will recognise the wisdom and the link between your rune draw and you daily activities. Just noticing at first is enough - it means you are becoming conscious of what is happening in your day and more importantly - what is happening in your mind. Remember that "where your mind is - is where you are. If you head is filled with nonsense it will play out in your life. Use the rune you picked in the morning to keep your mind focused. When you hit a block, or find a hassle that is making you angry, or sad or brings out any strong emotion, consider your rune and try and apply the insight you gained. The worst that can happen is that you look at the issue with new eyes. In fact - once you have drawn a rune on an issue - you cannot do otherwise - new knowledge is in your head and it cannot be taken out. How great is that.
The rune meanings are intricately tied to universal principles. They do represent any religion or cult. They are about you and your mind. They are a tool for exploring your own thoughts and subconscious mind. They do not involve outside energies - such as spirits or other worldly beings. They are only about you and how you work with you own energetic being. They do not need an in between guru or priest. (Although learning from a Rune master is a great way to kick start your process. No Rune master of any standing will act like a priest - he will not tell you what to do or how to do it. He will facilitate only - perhaps guide you and advise - but no more.
